Mobile diagnostic key programming

Matched to
your vehicle.

Modern keys must communicate correctly with the vehicle's immobiliser, remote locking and smart-entry systems. We programme compatible keys on site and verify every available function before completion.

TransponderRemoteSmart keyProximity

More than a key blade

The vehicle has to recognise it.

A key may fit the lock perfectly and still fail to start the engine if the transponder or smart-key data has not been correctly registered.

Odell Automotive provides mobile key programming for many cars and vans. Depending on the vehicle, this can include transponder registration, remote synchronisation, smart-key pairing and testing of keyless-entry or push-button-start functions.

Vehicle details are checked before attendance so the correct key type, programming method and equipment can be prepared in advance.

What can be programmed?

Different keys. Different security systems.

Programming coverage depends on the exact model, year, security module and key type fitted to the vehicle.

01

Transponder chips

Registration of compatible immobiliser chips so the vehicle authorises starting.

02

Remote locking

Synchronisation of compatible lock, unlock and boot-release functions.

03

Smart keys

Programming for many keyless-entry and push-button-start systems.

04

Proximity keys

Pairing of compatible hands-free keys that communicate with the vehicle at close range.

05

Replacement keys

Programming new compatible keys after loss, failure or damage.

06

Additional keys

Adding a spare key while an existing working key is still available.

Diagnosis before programming

Not every key fault is a programming fault.

A failed key can be caused by the battery, remote electronics, transponder chip, physical blade, vehicle antenna, immobiliser module or another vehicle system.

Before replacing or programming anything unnecessarily, the symptoms and available functions are checked to identify the most likely cause.

Key starts the vehicle but remote fails

The transponder may be recognised while the remote section needs synchronisation, repair or replacement.

Remote works but engine will not start

The immobiliser may not be recognising the transponder even though the buttons operate.

Key works intermittently

Intermittent faults may involve power, internal key damage, antenna communication or vehicle-side issues.

No keys are recognised

The fault may require broader diagnosis before programming a replacement key.

How it works

A controlled programming process.

01

Identify the vehicle

Provide the registration, make, model, year and a description of the existing key or fault.

02

Confirm compatibility

The correct key type, chip, remote frequency and programming route are checked.

03

Connect and prepare

Suitable diagnostic equipment is connected and the vehicle's security conditions are verified.

04

Programme the key

The transponder, remote or smart-key data is registered to the compatible system.

05

Verify every function

Starting, locking, unlocking, boot release, proximity and emergency-start functions are tested where available.

Secure communication

The key and vehicle exchange coded information.

Modern vehicle security relies on electronic identification. The key transmits data, the vehicle checks it and the immobiliser decides whether starting should be authorised.

Correct key hardware

The key shell, electronics, chip and frequency must suit the vehicle.

Secure registration

The compatible key is introduced to the vehicle using the appropriate programming procedure.

Vehicle-specific workflow

Different manufacturers and systems require different diagnostic steps.

Functional verification

Programming is not considered complete until the key is tested on the actual vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Key programming, explained.

Clear answers before compatibility is confirmed or an appointment is arranged.

What does car key programming do?

Programming registers a compatible transponder, remote or smart key with the vehicle so the relevant security and convenience functions can operate.

Can you programme a key I bought online?

Sometimes, but compatibility cannot be assumed. The key must have the correct electronics, chip, frequency and state for the vehicle. Supplying the wrong key can prevent successful programming.

Do you come to the vehicle?

Yes. Odell Automotive provides a mobile service at suitable homes, workplaces, trade premises and roadside locations.

Can you programme smart and proximity keys?

Many systems are supported, subject to the exact vehicle, model year and security platform.

Can you add a spare key without deleting the original?

For many vehicles, yes. Existing valid keys can remain registered while an additional compatible key is added.

Can lost keys be deleted from the vehicle?

Some systems allow missing or unwanted keys to be removed from memory. This is vehicle-specific and may form part of an all-keys-lost or security-related job.

Why does my key unlock the car but not start it?

The remote section and immobiliser transponder are separate functions. The buttons may work even when the vehicle does not recognise the transponder for starting.

Why does the car start but the remote buttons do not work?

The immobiliser chip may be correctly registered while the remote section needs synchronisation, repair or replacement.

How long does programming take?

Time varies by vehicle, key type, programming procedure and whether additional diagnosis is needed. A clearer estimate can be given after compatibility is checked.

Does the vehicle need to be present?

Yes, in most cases. Programming and verification are completed against the vehicle's actual security system.

Can you programme van keys?

Yes, many light commercial vehicles are supported. Provide the registration, model and year when enquiring.

Which areas do you cover?

Odell Automotive is based in Limavady and typically works within roughly 30 miles, with wider Northern Ireland travel available for suitable jobs.
